Introduction

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth. Deep in the misty Volcanoes National Park, you can come face-to-face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. But preparation is key to making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Getting Your Permit

Permits cost $1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Only 96 permits are issued per day across 8 gorilla families, so early booking is essential.

What to Pack

Wear long-sleeved shirts, sturdy hiking boots, and waterproof pants. Bring gloves for holding onto vegetation, insect repellent, and a light rain jacket. A good camera with a zoom lens will let you capture memorable moments without disturbing the gorillas.

On the Trek

Treks can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. A ranger guide will lead your group of maximum 8 people. Once you find the gorillas, you are allowed exactly 1 hour with them. Keep your voice low and movements slow.

Health Requirements

Visitors must be at least 15 years old. If you have a cold or any contagious illness, you will not be allowed to trek. Gorillas are susceptible to human diseases. Wear a mask if you feel unwell in the days before your trek.

Tips for a Great Experience

Hire a local porter. They are incredibly helpful on steep terrain and the income supports local communities. Start early (around 7 AM) and stay hydrated. The altitude in Volcanoes National Park ranges from 2,400m to over 4,500m, so acclimatize beforehand if possible.
